dear sparkle advice from one cat to anotherMy first book, Dear Sparkle: Advice From One Cat to Another, is available for purchase now! Here's the blurb from my back cover:

Dear Sparkle: Advice From One Cat to Another is not your usual human-written cat book. As all cats know, even when humans want to help, they lack the feline instinct that is both the source, and the solution to real cat problems. As a full-blooded feline (100% Somali, as a matter of fact), Sparkle understands what troubles her fellowcats and offers her insight. A quick swipe of the paw, crafty manipulation, feigned ignorance or any other typical kitty contrivance — Sparkle always comes up with great advice for all problems, common and uncommon. Dear Sparkle is a compilation of 3 years’ worth of advice columns from Sparkle's wildly popular website, sparklecat.com. Included are 37 black-and-white photos and an all-new introduction.

Cats Love to Scratch
Written by Sparkle

We cats positively lose ourselves in scratching. It’s one of life’s necessities for us. You humans just don’t realize the complexity of our need. It’s about a lot more than just sharpening our claws or shredding the big easy chair in the den (and no, we didn’t single out that easy chair to spite you!). Here are some of the reasons we unsheathe our claws and start digging them into the nearest textured surface:

Litter Box Power Play
Written by Sparkle
Friday, 23 June 2006
Dear Sparkle,
My cat is a finicky fella, who is as picky about his food as he is about his surroundings. He hates messy rooms. He loves to sleep in my fiancé’s home office because it is the tidiest room in the house. My problem is that he has taken to defiantly peeing in front of me in my home office and in our bedroom when his litter box goes a day past changing time. He will saunter over and squat — practically taunting me by making eye contact with me on top of it!

Besides changing the box more often, which I’m doing, what can I do to stop him now that his scent is there. We have had to get rid of carpets, clothes, sheets, blankets, duvets - all because he will urinate on the floor, whatever is on the floor — and the guest bed! I’m afraid he won’t stop now that he’s in the “mode.” He sits outside those doors (the rooms are next to each other) and he guards them, as if they were his territory. Help!

About Sparkle

sparkle the designer cat portrait

Sparkle is a purebred Somali cat, author, diarist, advice columnist and supermodel. She was born in Temecula on June 24, 2002 and moved to Los Angeles to begin her modeling career at the young age of 4 months. Her writing talents soon became apparent (helped along by the fact that her human was a professional editor), and soon she was dishing up advice to troubled cats. After a while it became obvious that the main problem most of these cats was their humans, so Sparkle decided it was time to get to the root of the matter. Hence the idea for Good Kitty! was born.

Good Kitty! is the first in-depth guide to cat behavior, written by a cat for humans. It is Sparkle’s latest book and a work-in-progress.
